Aaron Lieber is a director and cinematographer based in San Clemente, California. He founded Lieber Films in 2008 and directed the feature documentary Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2018 and streams on Netflix.

Background

Aaron started in water and surf cinematography, building a reputation for getting the camera where most rigs can't go: in the lineup with a custom-housed cinema camera, not on the boat. He founded Lieber Films in 2008 and grew from water work into documentary direction and branded storytelling.

His first feature started as a six-week short for a brand. It became a six-year documentary about Bethany Hamilton, who lost her left arm to a tiger shark at thirteen and was back competing by fourteen. Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable runs 97 minutes, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2018, had a theatrical release, and now streams on Netflix, Prime Video, and Apple TV.

Since then the work has run from short spots for LifeProof, Miller Lite, and Velveeta to brand documentaries like Marmon × The Wasp for Marmon Holdings, a Berkshire Hathaway company. He directs his own projects and works as a DP under other directors, most often Tim Tadder, filming and editing Ready Nutrition's spots with Giannis Antetokounmpo, Aaron Donald, and Jessica Pegula. Tadder's sets are also where he learned to roll motion between photo takes, which he has since done on shoots with photographers Brett Nadal, Brent Bielmann, and Jon Hamblin.

Recent work includes eero × Cal Raleigh, a spot he took from a one-page brief to delivery around a three-hour talent window, and an executive interview series for TransUnion.

How I work

I work three ways: as director, as DP under another director, or as director and DP combined on tighter teams. I can run solo when access matters more than headcount, bring my own crew when the scale calls for it, or plug into the production team you already have. Engagements run production-only or the full arc from pre-production through post.

The camera package is mine: a RED V-Raptor, a Nikon ZR, Zeiss CP.2 cinema primes, DJI stabilization and wireless transmission, Aputure lighting, and a location audio kit. See the full kit. For water, I run a custom housing for the V-Raptor with wireless signal, and I build and brief the water-safety team. Water cinematography. For aerials, I fly a DJI Mavic 4 Pro under an FAA Part 107 license. Drone and aerial.

I work direct with brands and through agencies, on projects from 30-second spots to feature length. All services.
